Plan a drop that sells out in the DMs

In short

Decide stock, price, the limit per person and how payment works before you announce anything, gather the people who asked to hear, and on the day give every customer the same facts and count a piece as sold only once it’s paid.

A drop is the best day in a small shop’s month, and the most chaotic. The post goes up and your DMs fill with the same five questions: how much, which colours, is COD available, when will it ship, is it still there. Somewhere in that pile are people ready to pay right now. Some wait too long for an answer and leave. Others are told “yes, available” after the last piece has gone.

A drop sells out cleanly when the hard decisions are made before the post goes up, and every answer on the day comes from the same short sheet. Here’s how to run one from start to finish.

Before: write a one-screen drop sheet

Every question you’ll get on the day has an answer you can decide today. Write them down in one place, short enough to read on your phone:

  • What, and how many. The Watch in Sand, 40 pieces. The Watch in Sage, 25.
  • Price. ₹4,999 each. Say whether delivery is included.
  • Limit per person. Two is plenty for most drops. Decide it now so nobody makes a judgement call mid-rush.
  • How to pay. Prepaid only is the simplest rule for a limited drop — a cash-on-delivery order holds a piece that may come back to you. If you do take COD, decide that now too.
  • When a piece is theirs. For example: “A piece is yours once it’s paid. Until then, it’s still on sale.”
  • Shipping. When the first parcels leave, and how long delivery takes.
  • Returns and exchanges. Your normal policy, or one for this drop. Say it before anyone pays, not after.

Before: gather the people who asked to hear

The people who sell out a drop are the ones who asked to be told. Gather them for a week or two, in the channel each of them already uses with you.

On Instagram, tease the drop in Stories and Reels, and add a countdown sticker to your Story so people can tap to be reminded when it ends. On the morning of the drop, post a preview. Everyone who replies to it or writes to you that day can get a direct message from you when it goes live — Instagram lets a business message someone within 24 hours of their last message.

On WhatsApp, ask for a clear yes, and keep a note of who gave one:

WhatsAppWhatsApp
is the sand watch coming back? missed it last time 😭
You
It is — 40 pieces in Sand, this Friday at 7 pm, ₹4,999. Want a message here when it’s live? You can say stop any time.
yes please!!
You
Done. You’ll hear from us here on Friday 🙂

On Friday, more than 24 hours will have passed since most of those chats, and WhatsApp only delivers a message after that if it’s a template Meta has approved. Write your announcement now and send it for approval a few days ahead. In insideDM you write it once in Templates and send it to Meta from there — see WhatsApp templates.

Before: put the facts where the answers come from

If anyone else answers your DMs on the day, they need the sheet too. Set your stock to the real number in your store, write your drop rules where they’ll be read, and ask the awkward questions yourself before customers do: “Can I pay half now?” “Can you keep one for me till Monday?” “Is the Sand one more brown or more beige?”

If you use insideDM, your agent answers price and stock from your live catalog and everything else from what you’ve written. You can type those awkward questions into a test in AI Studio and see its answers without anything reaching a customer — see teach your agent about your shop and test your agent, then switch it on.

On the day: announce at the minute you promised

Post the Reel, update your Story and message your list at the time you said — not five minutes early for a favoured few, which feels unfair to everyone else. Keep the announcement to one product, one price and one thing to do:

WhatsAppWhatsApp
You
The Watch drop is live 🎉 Sand and Sage, ₹4,999 each, two per person. Tap below and we’ll send your payment link. Reply STOP to stop offers.
Send me the link
You
Here you go — The Watch, Sand × 1, ₹4,999. Pay by UPI, card or netbanking, and it’s yours.

In insideDM, Campaigns sends on WhatsApp only to people who said yes, and on Instagram to everyone who wrote to you in the last 24 hours. Nothing goes until you confirm. See send an offer.

On the day: answer comments in a line, sell in the DM

Your comments will fill with “price?” and “sand one?”. Reply under the post with one short, warm line, and send the details privately. The price and the payment link belong in the DM, not in a comment that scrolls away. And answer what they asked: someone who typed “price?” wants a price, not an instruction to type something else.

Hi Meera — The Watch in Sand is ₹4,999, and it’s in stock. Shall I send you a payment link?
yes one please

Here’s your link for The Watch, Sand × 1 — ₹4,999. Pay with UPI, card or netbanking.

insideDM answers every comment twice like this: a reply on the post, and a private message with the price and the stock. See comments and story replies on Instagram and how a customer orders and pays in the chat.

On the day: a piece is sold when it’s paid

The fairest rule is first to pay, not first to ask. Tell people up front, and keep to it. It saves you from the worst moment of a drop: telling someone who has already paid that their piece went to someone else.

Keep the stock number honest while orders come in. If the count in your store lags behind what you’ve sold, whoever is answering will sell the same piece twice. “Only 5 left” is a good line when it’s true, and an expensive one when it isn’t.

On the day: say “sold out” the moment it is

When a colour sells out, set its stock to zero, edit the caption, pin a comment and update your Story — all at once. Then turn every late “is it still there?” into a restock list:

WhatsAppWhatsApp
is the sage one still there?
You
Sorry Rohit — The Watch in Sage has sold out. Sand has 4 left at ₹4,999. Or I can message you here when Sage is back?
sage only. tell me when it’s back
You
Will do. You’re on the list for Sage.

After: close the drop properly

  • Unpaid links. Send one reminder before a link runs out, then let the piece go back on sale. insideDM sends that reminder for you before an unpaid order’s payment link runs out.
  • The restock list. When it’s back, message only the people who asked, about the thing they asked for. In insideDM, a “Back in stock” follow-up does this once you set it up — see follow-ups you set once.
  • Your buyers. Confirm each order, tell them when it ships, and check in after it arrives. That’s how a drop buyer becomes a regular — the next steps are in turn a first order into a regular.
  • Your sheet. Write down every question you were asked that wasn’t on it. That’s the start of next drop’s sheet.

The short version

  • Decide stock, price, the limit per person, how payment works and returns before you announce.
  • Gather the people who asked: a countdown sticker on Instagram, a clear yes on WhatsApp, and a template approved in advance.
  • Announce at the minute you promised — one product, one price, one thing to do.
  • Answer comments in a public line and sell in the DM. A piece is sold when it’s paid.
  • Say “sold out” everywhere at once, and turn late askers into a restock list.
